Preparing for your first interview
What to do before, during and after an interview so you feel confident and leave a strong impression.
By Команда INTERO
An interview is a conversation, not an exam. The employer wants to see whether you're a good fit for each other. A little preparation removes almost all the nerves.
Before the interview
- Research the company. What it does, its products and values. Fifteen minutes on their website is enough.
- Re-read the vacancy. Think about how your skills match the requirements.
- Prepare examples. Recall two or three projects you can talk about in detail.
- Check your tech. For an online interview, test the camera, microphone and connection in advance.
Common questions
- Tell us about yourself. — Keep it short: who you are, what you study, what interests you.
- Why us? — This is where your research pays off.
- Your strengths and weaknesses. — Be honest; for a weakness, say how you're working on it.
- Any questions for us? — Always ask at least one. It shows interest.
During the conversation
- Arrive on time — five minutes early is ideal.
- Speak calmly; it's fine to pause and think.
- If you don't know an answer, say so, but show your reasoning.
- Be polite and stay natural.
The STAR method
When describing your experience, use: Situation → Task → Action → Result. It makes your answer concrete and convincing.
After the interview
A short thank-you message is good manners. If there's no reply after a week or two, a polite follow-up is completely normal.
Remember
A rejection is not a failure. Sometimes expectations simply didn't match. Ask what you could improve, and move on.
